What We Believe
The Word of God is True
As a church that stands in the tradition of the reformation, we look to God’s word as our rule of life. The written word, contained in the Bible, and the Living Word, Jesus Christ, provide the foundational supports of our faith.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16
The Spirit of God is Active
God is actively at work in our world today through his Spirit. Christians are empowered by the Holy Spirit to be Jesus’ representatives on the earth. By living in obedience to his will, we become conduits of his love and truth to our world.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with forever, the Spirit of Truth.” -John 14:16
The Human Heart Must Respond
It is not enough to merely affirm a general belief in God. When one hears the good news about Jesus Christ, he or she must turn from trusting in their own goodness and, by faith alone, receive the free gift of God for themself by believing what Jesus said about himself. (John 1:12, John 14:6) From there, the gospel is transformative – changing every inch of our lives. So, we boldly proclaim that Knowing Jesus Changes Everything!
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” -Mark 12:30

To honor Jesus by becoming and making disciples. At Living Hope, we desire to strategically join God in the vision by offering spaces designed for becoming and making disciples. We do this through Gathering Events, Growth Groups, Growth Classes, and Go Experiences.
Gathering Events: Bringing larger groups or the entire Living Hope Family together for teaching, worship, prayer or fellowship.
Growth Groups: 2-12 people building relationships toward transformation in Christ. These include traditional mentoring relationships (one-to-one) or peer mentoring groups such as Men’s, Women’s, Couples, Family or Student groups.
Growth Classes: Offer interactive study and learning. These are offered Sunday mornings or various bible studies through the week.
Go Experiences: Bringing people together to show love to others through serving locally or globally.
Living Hope exists to live out the message: “Knowing Jesus Changes Everything.” Our core values can be expanded through the letters H–O–P–E: Hearts that are Open and Powerfully Engaged.
We desire to be: Jesus-focused, biblically-based and Holy Spirit-led.
We desire to be: relationship-oriented, led by grace, and multi-generationally active,
We desire to be: faith-enabled, expectant of God’s active and powerful working
We desire to be: outward reaching, kingdom-minded and culturally alert
Tim MacGowan, Pastor
Tim and his wife, Nancy, started Living Hope in 2004. Both are native Northern Virginians who felt called to plant this church in their home region after 13 years of ministry in other locales. Following 8 years in a sales position, Tim served as a worship leader and youth pastor in Central Florida in an Episcopal Church. From there he went back to seminary and received an M.Div from the King’s Seminary in 2002. Nancy has had a lifelong call to minister to teens and children as well as a passion for missions and worship. Together they have a heart to see the grace of God and the truth of Scripture made real in the lives of those who follow Jesus Christ. Tim and Nancy have three children – Laura, Patrick and Benjamin.
